Portal Guns
Portal Guns
Open a portal anywhere, walk through it, and walk back whenever you like. This page covers everything the item can do.
Last updated August 2026. Part of the VortexXtra Item Catalog.
The Basics
- Left-Click opens the Portal Gun menu, this is where you set where your portal leads.
- Right-Click fires a portal at your current location, using whatever destination you last set.
There's no durability or ammo cost to worry about, just a destination you need to configure first. If you haven't set one yet, right-clicking will just remind you to.
You can only have one portal pair open at a time. Fire a new one while another's still active and it'll tell you to wait.
Every portal you create automatically closes itself after 15 seconds, so don't dawdle.
Setting a Destination
Open the menu (left-click) and you've got three ways to pick where you're going:
- Portal Waypoints - jump straight to one of your saved named locations (see below).
- Planetary Coords - quick presets for the main world, its Nether, and its End, plus a shortcut straight to your own Private Cell if you have one.
- Coordinates Editor - type in exact X, Y, Z coordinates manually.
A few limits apply to manual coordinates:
- Must be within 5,000 blocks of your current position on both X and Z.
- In the Nether, your Y must be below 120.
- Your destination has to be at least 5 blocks away from where you're standing.
- Both ends need a clear 3-wide column of air, obstructed spots won't work.
Named Waypoints
Save your favorite spots and jump back to them any time, no need to remember coordinates.
/swp <name>- saves your current location under that name. You need the Portal Gun in your hand to use this./dwp <name>- deletes a saved waypoint by name.
You get 3 waypoint slots by default, with a donor perk unlocking the rest for a full 6. Waypoints are personal, they're tied to your account and nobody else can see or use yours.
Walking Through
Step into the portal you created and you'll be sent to your destination. Here's the good part: step into that exit portal and you'll come right back to where you started, no need to fire a second portal just to get home. There's a short 1.5 second cooldown after each trip through, so you can't instantly bounce back and forth.
If you've got a tamed pet or mount nearby when you step through, it'll come along with you.
Customization
Head into the Portal Gun Settings menu to pick your portal's color, Default, Blue, Red, or Green. Purely cosmetic, but it's a nice way to tell your portal apart from someone else's.
A Few Notes
- Some worlds or areas may have portal creation restricted by staff, if you can't open a portal somewhere, that's likely why.
- Portal Gun parts (the gun itself and its crafting components) can't be placed as blocks or moved through hoppers, they're meant to stay in your inventory.
- Right-clicking a sign with the gun in hand won't fire a portal, so sign shops still work normally while you're holding it.
